Thanks for the opportunity to be a guest columnist. A contribution to The Old-Guard is appropriate because Veterans Affairs Canada should be learning lessons from the past. Recently, as the Veterans Ombudsman, I have stirred up a hornet's nest of discontent associated with the administration and delivery of veterans' benefits. The press conference that started this now very public debate was a particularly distasteful thing for me to do. However, there was no alternative. I came to the realization that any recommendations or observations from the Office of the Veterans Ombudsman were basically being ignored. This is similar to what has happened to the reports from the various veterans' advisory groups established by Veterans Affairs and with the recommendations provided by veterans associations.
